Under a clement sky, the 238,8 kilometres of race were testing for the 7 245 riders who set off this morning. Raymond POULIDOR, l’Etape local, gave the start at 6h30 sharp !
For twenty minutes, there was nothing but a succession of bikes and jingling of transponders at the Carrefour Tourny in Limoges.
The col du Pas de Payrol (1 589m) after already 180 km of race, proved to be conclusive in the race for victory. Four men arrived in front of the others (7 minutes ahead of their pursuers) and it was Jean-Christophe Currit, an ex-pro, who won ahead of last year’s winner, Loic Herbreteau. At 18h30, more than 6 000 riders had already finished the stage.
The Riders :
«
There isn’t a flat metre of ground » exclaimed Michel Sacaze, winner of the 51-60 age group category, 7th in the overall ranking. With 4 250 m of difference in altitude, l’Etape was indeed tough.
The Winner, Jean-Christophe CURRIT, delighted to have done so well in this «real slog of a stage» warned that the pros were going to have fun on Wednesday.
The first female rider, the American Giana Roberge, finished 308th in the scratch.
Alain PROST, 364th, suffered with his back but was happy to have finished this wonderful competition.
Richard KRAJICEK, the former Wimbledon winner, finished 5 227th after 11h08 of effort !
