L'Etape du Tour

Pau, as ever, the pace-setter !

Amateur cyclists, get ready for your moment of glory! On the 20th of July will take place the Famous Stage of the Tour de France starting in Pau: THE reference race awaited by all cycling fanatics ! The chance to match up to your idols and pave the way for them four days ahead of the passing through of the Tour. Thrills guaranteed !

Pau, gateway to adventure, symbolises the assault on the Pyrenean Giants : the famous Tourmalet – 17,1 km and its 7,3% gradient, - followed directly by the dizzy descent to Luz-Saint-Sauveur, before the awe-inspiring 13,6 km climb up to Hautacam, focal point of the Tour.
Pau – Hautacam, 24th july 2014, 18th stage, 145.5 km : the must for all Kings of the Mountains !

At the start in Pau, emotions are multiplied by ten, as the riders feel overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the thrill of the moment. For what other capital unveils its mountains – home ground for climbing specialists - just as Paris unveils its Eiffel tower ? As any cyclist will tell you, if the pyrenean routes have become the world cycling mecca, the summits on the stage starting at Pau are amongst the most renowned of the Tour !

Now, would this make Pau the symbolic capital of the Tour de France ? If we take into account the number of times that the bearnese capital has been a stage-town : yes ! After Paris and Bordeaux, Pau can pride itself on being the town through which the « Big Loop » has passed the most often : sixty-five times since the Tour’s creation !

For families wanting to get into tune with the « Big Loop », and whilst waiting to discover their hero of the stage, the bearnese capital is organising a number of activities and events in the the town : exploration of Henry IV’s chateau, rally for all the family using GPS trackers, discovery of the english mansions in the fashionable neighbourhoods, guided visit of the Jurançon vineyards, tour of the stallions at the National Stud at Gelos, one of the most famous in France. The museum of Fine Arts, the King Bernadotte museum and the Paratroop museum each organise their own visits, cultural moments for all the family to enjoy whilst waiting for the next passing of the roadshow !

As from now the Office de Tourisme Pau Pyrénées welcomes all reservation enquiries for your stay. See you soon in Pau !
