The 10th stage of the 105th edition of the Tour de France will be yours!

October 17th 2017

Discover the route

We invite you to the shores of Lake Annecy for an expedition across the mountains that takes you to the nearby resort of Le Grand-Bornand... after some rather challenging detours.

After battling your way up the Col de la Croix-Fry, where you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Aravis mountains, you'll then embark on the 7-km climb to the Plateau des Glières at an average gradient of 11%. You’ll be confronted not only with the steep slope but also the dust on a 1.5-Km portion of untarmacked road before you reach the plateau where members of the local resistance used to hide during the Second World War. This is followed by a hard slog up to the Col de Romme, then the Col de la Colombière, the latter perched at 1,613 metres above sea level.

The total elevation gain for the day is over 4,000 metres: the final downhill to Le Grand-Bornand is the well-earned reward for all your hard work…

Just like the professionals who will ride in the 18th stage of the Tour de France on 20th July, these thousands of cycling fans took part in the legend of the Big Loop and enjoyed an incredible experience.

Three climbs, with a total of 3,529 m of elevation gains, were on the schedule of this 2017 edition of l'Étape du Tour. After the 5-hour long race, Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen won the 2017 edition of l'Étape du Tour, in the men's category, in 5:15:26, with an average speed of 34.43 km/h. He outdistanced France’s Tao Quéméré, the winner of the 2016 edition (5:17:43), who was closely followed by another Norwegian, Jonas Ellingsen, in 5:17:51.

In the women's category, France’s Edwige Pitel made it three in a row after her victory on l’Étape du Tour in 2015, and won the race in 5:42:14 with a significant lead over her challengers Magdalena Saint Jean (6:08:58) and Charlotte Morel (6:09:34).

You experienced an exceptional day of cycling!

July 10th 2016

11, 471 participants in a peloton which boasted no fewer than 62 nationalities were present this morning in Megève to set off on the 24th edition of L’Étape du Tour. After two days of a huge cycling celebration which was hosted in the Village bringing together the event’s 75 exhibitors, they set off on an exceptional 122-km route, similar to that of the 20th stage of the Tour de France which represents the final stage in the Alpes on Saturday 23rd July.

This 2016 edition of L’Étape du Tour once again fulfilled its promises allowing thousands of cycling fans to ride in the same conditions as a professional for a day (Ride like a pro). Three mythical climbs, in particular the Col de Joux Plane, ranked “hors catégorie”, located at kilometre 110 (11.6 km at an average gradient of 8.5%), and a total of 2,873 m of elevation gains, were on the agenda of this exceptional cyclosportive.

Completely immersed in the ambiance of the Tour de France, which will take this route on 23rd July, the day before the finish on the Champs Élysées, the riders took advantage of the closed roads to give it their best shot, and often to surpass themselves, cheered on by the crowd and surrounded by the race’s following vehicles (in particular the 75 motorbikes which ensured the participants’ safety and Mavic’s 8 assistance vehicles).

The details of the climbs of the 2016 Étape du Tour:

  • The Col des Aravis - km 22.5 – 1,487 m – category 2 climb – 6.7 km with an average gradient of 7%
  • The Col de la Colombière – 47 km – 1,618m – category 1 climb- 11.7 km with a gradient of 5.8%
  • The Col de Joux Plane - km 110.5 – 1,691 m - hors catégorie climb – 11.6 km with a gradient of 8.5 %

Tao Quéméré was the winner of the 2016 Étape du Tour. For his first participation in the benchmark cyclosportive, after a great second place in the Roc des Alpes’ Roc Trophy in June, the young French former cross-country skier, who is today a technical specialist for the French teams of the discipline, took everyone by surprise.

In the women’s category, Edwige Pitel, the French road race champion, and the winner of the 2015 Étape du Tour, notched up a second victory in this 2016 edition. An even greater victory as she crossed the finish line in Morzine wearing her new French jersey on the day of the final of the Euro 2016.

11,471 riders set off from Megève for the 122 km of this 2016 edition, on a route similar to that of the 20th stage of the Tour de France which will take place on Saturday 23rd July. More than 10,000 finishers from 62 nationalities completed the race in Morzine.

Men:

1- Tao Quéméré- 3:33:35

2- Matthieu Converset – 3:35:50

3- Jérémy Bescond- 3:36:13

Women:

1- Edwige Pitel- 3:56:37

2- Magdalena De Saint Jean – 4:09:06

3- Jeanne Collonge– 4:11:15

Morzine, the stage town of the 2016 Étape du Tour, also played host to this great cycling celebration all day long on Sunday.

The finish zone, located on the forecourt of the Skoda Arena, allowed finishers to recover and be awarded the race’s official medal. Many types of entertainment were also on offer to the public who made the most of the event’s exceptional atmosphere.

Daily entertainment:

  • Exceptional trial bike demonstration at the Skate Park (1pm / 4.30pm and 6pm)
  • Men’s and women’s podium (3pm)
  • Handiness and initiation area for children, organised by the Regional Cycling Committee (Skate Park)

  • Activities in the heart of the Parc des Dérêches (swimming complex, walks in the forest, trekking, adventure trail)
  • Activities organised at the Palais des sports (games for children, childcare area, etc.)
  • Massage area and pasta party allowing the participants to recover

The Tour de France adventure continues throughout the world.

Cycling fans can thus take advantage of riding in extraordinary cyclosportives, organised by Amaury Sport Organisation, in London (L’Etape London by Le Tour de France on 25th September 2016), in Brazil (L’Etape Brasil by Le Tour de France on 18th September 2016), in Paraguay (La Etapa Paraguay by Le Tour de France on 30th October 2016), in Australia (L’Etape Australia by Le Tour de France on 3rd December 2016), and in Mexico (La Etapa Ciudad de México by Le Tour de France in 2017) and in Wales (Dragon Ride L'Etape Wales by Le Tour de France in 2017).

Latest information about the route

July 6th 2016

The Préfecture’s decision

As it was announced at the beginning of the week, the peloton of L'Etape du Tour will not take the Col de la Ramaz.

As the organisers, we are obviously very disappointed that we can’t offer you this magnificent route in its entirety, but the préfecture of Haute-Savoie has made the right decision. It wasn’t conceivable to allow 15,000 cyclists take a route where there was a risk of a landslide.

Nevertheless, the Col des Aravis, the Col de la Colombière and the Col de Joux-Plane will be serious contenders.

The Avoriaz Challenge

However, if the 122km and the 2,800m of elevation gains of L’Etape du Tour leave you wanting more, we suggest that you tackle the Col d’Avoriaz, i.e. an additional 14-km climb, just like Andy Schleck, on a beautiful summer day  in 2010.

This climb will not be timed, but the organisers will set up water outlets on the different car parks along the ascent in order rehydrate yourself and allow you to climb the additional 840 metres. We advise those who want to take up this challenge to park their car in one of the car parks in Avoriaz.

Timing

L’Etape du Tour boasts a timing system allowing your sporting level to be revealed as precisely as possible.

Like every year, you will be detected on the start line (Megève) as well on the finish line (Morzine).   The general ranking as well as your average speed will be calculated between these two points.

All the climbs will be timed and give rise to an additional scratch ranking called the “King of the Mountains challenge”. The first three riders in the scratch ranking will win their race number for the 2017 edition L’Etape du Tour.

ROUTE MODIFICATION

July 4th 2016

For several weeks, part of the route of L’Etape du Tour was at risk due to falling rocks level with the descent of the Col de la Ramaz.

We hoped that we could offer you an unmodified route, identical to the one announced when the registrations were launched.

However, the competent authorities and the organisers believe it is preferable to not take the Col de la Ramaz. Although the area has been secured for motorized traffic with automatic traffic lights which are activated in the event that rocks fall, the passage of 15,000 cyclists for several hours represents an additional risk.

Nevertheless the modified route will represent a major sporting challenge: 122km and 2,873m of elevation gains.

The start times haven’t been modified. You can find the sporting information that has been updated in the different sections of the website.

For the 20th stage of the Tour de France, which will be held on 23rd July, 10 days after l'Etape du Tour, a decision will be made the day before it takes place, according to how the situation has evolved.

Authorisation of disc brakes on L’Etape du Tour.

June 21st 2016

The Fédération Française de Cyclisme (FFC) acknowledges the UCI’s position about the use of disc brakes in mass participation events, recalls that their use is forbidden in professional road races and requests the implementation of a safety procedure to avoid accidents.

The FFC and its Conseil Fédéral (Federal Council) acknowledge the decision of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) authorising the use of disc brakes in mass participation events.

The decision, made by the Union Cycliste Internationale, during its Management Committee, on 2nd and 3rd June in Lausanne, is as follows:

“In the area of equipment, the UCI Management Committee approved a clarification to its regulations to make it clear that the use of disc brakes – already widespread – is authorised in mountain bike, trials and mass participation (road) events. These clarified rules are applicable with immediate effect. Their use in events on the international or national road race calendars remains suspended at the request of the Association des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP), supported by the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA).”

The Fédération Française de Cyclisme recalls that the use of disc brakes is forbidden in all professional road races. The FFC’s Conseil Féderal (Federal Council), which met on 17th and 18th June, requests the implementation of safety and protective measures aimed at safeguarding the physical integrity of athletes.
